About Functional Labs

Below are some of the functional labs I use with  my clients.

Each lab provides clues that will be integrated when I create an impression on your case and create a healing protocol.

Most commonly, I use the GI Map, OAT, DUTCH, and Comprehensive Wellness Panel,

but your unique needs will determine which functional testing is best for you.

Based on an extensive intake form + additional quizzes like for candida, mold toxicity, thyroid dysfunction, or heavy metals, I will capture symptoms and create a timeline of relevant health changes.  Through this assessment and our discussions, we can figure out the best path forward, and which functional labs would be recommended.

Stress and Hormone Panels (DUTCH or SHP)

(DUTCH is a urine test | SHP is a saliva test)

Description

These tests evaluate cortisol patterns, sex hormones, androgens, melatonin, and hormone metabolites.

WHY TAKE THIS TEST?

Hormones are the master director for a symphony of functions.  When imbalanced, we can experience symptoms like disrupted sleep, weight issues, brain fog, mood fluctuations, anxiety, fatigue, heart palpitations and headaches to name a few.  Hormones also give us a window into our gut health as well as our propensity for diseases like cancer.

GI Map with or without Zonulin

(stool test)

Description

The Diagnostic Solutions Laboratory GI Microbial Assay Plus (“GI-MAP”) includes markers for gluten sensitivity (anti-gliadin IgA), inflammation in the gut (calprotectin), immunity in the gut (SIgA), pancreatic enzyme sufficiency (elastase), and occult blood. It also looks at general dysbiosis of normal flora and opportunistic bacteria as well as the presence of pathogens – including H Pylori, parasites, worms, viruses, etc. – in the gastrointestinal tract.

Zonulin is an add-on that is an intestinal permeability marker.

WHY TAKE THIS TEST?

Gut health is paramount to maintain a strong immune system, brain function, and overall health. If you are experiencing gut issues like bloating, gas, reflux, constipation, hypermotility, or excessive gas or gas pains, this test can provide helpful clues. In addition, headaches, weight issues, allergies, brain fog, depression/mood issues, autoimmune issues, anxiety, sleep disturbances, skin conditions, and muscle aches/pains can be linked to gut dysfunction.

Food Sensitivity (MRT or igG)

blood draw for MRT  |  finger prick blood spot for igG

Description

The Oxford Biomedical Technologies MRT LEAP 170 screens for hidden inflammatory responses to 170 different foods and food-chemicals.

The Great Plains Laboratory IgG Food MAP With Candida Plus Yeasts screens for delayed hypersensitivity reactions to 192 foods to identify foods that are capable of causing inflammation that can trigger a large number of adverse reactions as well as for Candida and Yeast sensitivity.

WHY TAKE THIS TYPE OF TEST? WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCES?

Even “healthy foods” can create inflammation if they are inflammatory for you. Not an allergy, food sensitivities can be more dangerous in that the inflammatory responses we get when eating certain food can leave our body’s immune system weakened and vulnerable to disease states or dysfunction. It is difficult to pinpoint foods through trial and error because the responses you develop can be varied, inconsistent, and take up to 72 hours to present. If you do have sensitivities, you may experience skin issues, headaches, bloating, pain, weight gain or a host of other issues. There are 2 main types of food sensitivity tests. Find out which is right for you.

Each test has its pros and cons.  The MRT is able to detect foods even if you are not eating them but sometimes has false negatives; and, the igG test only detects foods that you are currently eating, but also has a candida marker and is easy to take with a finger prick test.

Organic Acid Test (OAT)

(urine)

Description

The Organic Acids Test (OAT)from Great Plains Laboratories offers a comprehensive metabolic snapshot of a person's overall health. With 76 markers, it looks at vitamin and mineral levels, oxidative stress, neurotransmitter levels, and is the only OAT to include markers for oxalates, which are highly correlated with many chronic illnesses.  This lab provides an accurate evaluation of intestinal yeast and bacteria.

Abnormally high levels of these microorganisms can cause or worsen behavior disorders, hyperactivity, movement disorders, fatigue and immune function. Many people with chronic illnesses and neurological disorders often excrete several abnormal organic acids in their urine.

WHY TAKE THIS TEST?

The markers within the OAT provide insight for people experiencing symptoms like:

  • Cognitive and Attention problems
  • Autism
  • Autoimmune disorders
  • Chronic pain | Headaches
  • Depression | Anxiety
  • Digestive problems | Gut issues
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Low energy | Fatigue

Metabolic Wellness Profile (MWP)

(dry urine)

Description

FLUIDS iQ’s Metabolic Wellness Profile dried urine test measures levels of Indican, Total Bile Acids and 8-OHdG…key metabolic markers of Digestion, Detoxification and Oxidative Stress.

WHY TAKE THIS TEST?

If your liver is sluggish, you have excess bile in your system, your oxidative stress levels are high, or you have putrefaction of proteins you are consuming, your body may not be absorbing nutrients or ridding itself of toxins. This puts a high toxic load onto your organs that will negatively affect your overall health. This lab will help identify issues surrounding detoxification, cell breakdown, or digestive issues so that we can support and correct dysfunction.

Mucosal Barrier Assessment (MBA)

(dry blood spot)

Description

Fluids iQ screens for 3 markers in this mucosal barrier assessment.

Zonulin (pre-Haptoglobin 2) is a protein that modulates the permeability of tight junctions between cells of the digestive tract wall. Once triggered, Zonulin plays an important role in the creation of what we think of as gut “leakiness.”

Histamine is an important regulator of gut function and plays a key role in the body’s inflammatory processes.

Diamine Oxidase (DAO) is one of the primary ways our body makes sure that Histamine levels stay in check.

WHY TAKE THIS TEST?

The term “leaky gut” refers to a situation where tight junctions in your small intestine are compromised creating a situation where undigested foods, chemicals or toxins are entering the bloodstream before they are broken down or handled through normal detox pathways. As a result, you can develop food, environmental or chemical sensitivities. You can also have systemic inflammation which can lead to autoimmune responses and cause further dysfunction across all body systems.

Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO)

(breath test)

Description

SIBO is a condition in which there is an overgrowth of normal bacteria in the wrong place. Non-pathogenic bacteria which normally live in the large intestine have abnormally overgrown into the small intestine, where they don’t belong.

Because the small intestine is not designed for heavy bacterial colonization, when bacteria accumulate or back up into the small intestine, they feed on the carbohydrates we eat as they pass through the small intestine and produce hydrogen and/or methane gas, which cause symptoms such as abdominal bloating, gas, and pain.

SIBO negatively affects both the structure and function of the small intestine, leading to increased intestinal permeability (“leaky gut”),  nutritional deficiencies, and food sensitivities.

WHY TAKE THIS TEST?

SIBO can wreak havoc on your health and cause symptoms like:

  •  IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome 0 in 84% of IBS patients in studies)
  • Abdominal Pain & Cramps
  • Abdominal Bloating
  • Abdominal Distension (belly sticks out)
  • Gas (Flatulence/Belching)
  • Constipation or Diarrhea
  • Heartburn & GERD
  • Nausea
  • Food Sensitivities
  • Headaches
  • Joint Pain
  • Fatigue
  • Skin issues (eczema, rosacea, rashes, acne)
  • Depression
  • Brain fog
  • Malabsorption & Nutritional Deficiencies (B12/iron)
  • Histamine Intolerance
  • Restless legs syndrome
  • Weight loss or gain

Markers included in screen

Hydrogen (Gas levels are measured in ppm at baseline and at 20, 40, 60, 80, 100, and 120 minutes after the consumption of the lactulose solution)

Methane (Gas levels are measured in ppm at baseline and at 20, 40, 60, 80, 100, and 120 minutes after the consumption of the lactulose solution)
